Cottonseed oil is the oil derived from the seeds of cotton plants. Primarily used for cooking purposes, Cottonseed oil in India is widely available and is used by almost every household.

Refined Cottonseed oil is typically of a light golden hue, with a mild, neutral taste. It's easily affordable compared to other expensive cooking oils such as Olive oil.

Usage of Cottonseed oil

Apart from being used as a condiment in cooking, the usage of Cottonseed oil is multipurpose and its medicinal properties are acknowledged by physicians.

It is widely used in commercially manufactured Potato chips and other packaged food products such as cookies, mayonnaise and salad dressings in order to increase their shelf-life. Also used in baking and frying purposes as it provides a chewy, moisturized consistency to baked goods.

In ancient times, cottonseed oil in India was used in the making of candles and oil lamps. The leftover cottonseed after plantation was usually discarded or used as cattle feed. It is a very recent phenomena that cottonseed oil has gained popularity as an active ingredient in cosmetics, insecticides and even in detergents.

Unrefined Cottonseed oil contains a harmful toxin, known as Gossypol. This toxin is the reason it also serves as a pesticide, to keep common insects at bay. However, the refined Cottonseed oilintake does not pose a threat to health. The amount of Gossypol in the refined cottonseed oil is significantly reduced by running it through several purifying processes such as bleaching and deodorization to make it completely safe to consume.

Cottonseed oil contains both the polyunsaturated fatty acids and a small amount of monounsaturated fat content. The other constituents are linolenic acid, Vitamin E and alpha- tocopherol that protects against certain health issues such as diabetes and cataracts. Vitamin K is also found in cottonseed oil and helps increase haemoglobin count in blood which is essential for blood clotting functions.

Benefits: Cottonseed oil contains essential fats like omega-3 and omega-6 that our body is unable to produce naturally. It is also high in Polyunsaturated fat that helps lower the LDL (bad cholesterol) and enhances the increase of HDL i.e. the good cholesterol, reducing the risk of Cardiovascular diseases and stabilization of the blood pressure.

It is also believed to enhance hair and skin health. Cottonseed oil is said to have certain properties that benefit the skin and hair. Even though not scientifically proved, cottonseed oil is still used as a cosmetic remedy as it moisturizes the skin, slowing down the ageing process. Containing vitamin E, tocopherol and anti-inflammatory properties, this oil is also used in various cosmetic products such as shampoos and lotions. It is also said to possess anti-cancer and tremendous healing properties.

Side effects: The case being very rare, many people are allergic to cottonseed oil. Allergic response after consumption might include swelling of throat, face or mouth, severe breathing difficulties, triggered asthma, nausea, abdominal pain and vomiting. Thus, in case of allergies, it is not safe to intake this oil AT ALL. Conducting a simple allergy test before trying out new food products is extremely necessary.


It is extremely important to remember that Cottonseed oil is oil after all and excessive intake of any food item cannot ever be a solution to any health problem. Even Healthy food products should be consumed moderately and only a properly planned regular diet that contains a balance of all the essential nutrients can help control and reduce the health issues.
